Hi Bachus --

I lean toward compression, too. Yamaha's memory allocation (especially waveform memory) is rather clunky. In their defense, the clunkiness is partially due to the need to lay out samples (compressed or uncompressed) in contiguous, sequential chunks. This is necessary to maintain a high enough data transfer rate from ONFI flash.

I feel like I'm already out on a limb with speculation. More details from Yamaha should help us to fill in the story.

All the best -- pj

We will , see, in the end the choosen tech is not whats important, its important that think work ..

Really looking forward to this patch..
There is a lot of goodness in it..
But its espescially good to see proof that Yamaha Arrangers is finally on the sme track as Yamaha Synths..

Whats also good to know is that all these things where in a post about 2 years ago, that got deleted and turned into drama.  Hope we will see more of the goodness described in that post in the future..

Hi Uli

I do not think that Yamaha actually reserved any memory for the Audio Styles in the Genos.  Yes they did on the Tyros 5.

Bill

Yes, they did. With firmware 1.10 you could load expansion audio styles using YEM, and there was 1 GB of memory reserved for this. This  limit was shown in YEM. With firmware 1.20 Genos was able to read audio styles from USB devices. So the internal flash rom memory for audio styles was not needed any more. So it was unused until now. Many users in German groups were waiting for Yamaha to give this unused memory free for expansion voices. I think that this will happen now.

(So I am not a believer of the lossless compression theory. Because this new limit would not work for Yamaha expansions, since they are already compressed. But using compression for user samples would be a great advancement. Nord can do this: the Nord sample manager does compress user samples for use in internal memory.)

Great...more expansion memory for me means even more bagpipes samples! a sound I use which always works to stop a new years eve gig going on too long especially if one makes excessive use of the pitch bender . It wasn’t the German scientists that developed the first military sound weapon , it was the Scotch ! Lol

Sounds a little fishy to me.

For one, the website http://www.global.yamaha.com/ does not exist.

Next, we go from version 1.2 to 1.3 to 1.4 and now 1.41 then suddenly jump to 2.0?  ::). Phony if you ask me. Water cooler gossip at best.

But, time will tell.

Hi Richard.

It's not unusual to step up to next level version x.0 when major changes and/or addons is done.
The 'between steps' are often when bugfixes and small changes is done.
I think this 'addon route' is planned in many ways, not only because of what users whishes, but also how far to go before next keyboard version arrive.

Regaring the link that don't work, it is what was in use when the YT site was created in 2007. Not unusual that such old links are changed.
There is updated link beneath the old one.

Also Yamaha wrote when 1.4 was made public:
"It represents Yamaha's commitment to not stand still as we continue to expand an already incredible musical instrument... and the journey is not over."

I'm looking forward to the X-Mas present for my Genos. :)
Cheers & Happy Playing.  :)

With the Yamaha Version 2.0 Teaser showing Superior Pack, 50 new styles, 25 voices, would that all include new styles and voices? If so. would the styles be added to the same style selection as well as the voices to the voice selection. Just very curious.  Thanks..

Hi Mike --

My guess is the Superior Pack will be loaded and handled like any other expansion pack. This seems like the simplest solution for Yamaha engineering.

I emphasized "guess" because no one really knows much about the update and almost everything in this thread is speculative.

Rather than wait around and think too much about too little information, I'm playing instead.  :)  :)

1. I sent mail to Yamaha because (if you have read all post with this new video) it was a lot of people that said Yamaha_Global is a fake account. I did not say that.
2. There are a lot of people that are "scared" to open a ticket to Yamaha and ask them things, and I don't know why.
3. My email has a list of requests, not only that "stupid" question, but I asked them in the name of all which had no confidence in that account. And now I assure them it is not a fake account.

If this forum is a joke, I think you must apologize to all good people who wrote here...

It's already been said that neither the video and definitely not the channel are fake.
If you "google" Genos and look at yamaha's (usa) official page, you will see videos from the same YouTube channel.
That simple.Anyway....
Do you like the update or not?
Will you still keep an older version because you don't trust the team that created your Genos or not?
Do some of  you, still feel disappointed  because they have added new functions on the SX900 that your Genos doesn't have?
Do you become to understand the benefits of the new operating system that the Genos has compare to the Tyros line?

I also have the SX900 and look forward to chord looper on my Genos as well also extra flash memory and new styles and voices.
Operating system is the same as always but you access functions a little differently via screen which I find much better than my Tyros was.

I think it's great Yamaha has upgraded the Operating System so they could add new features and more memory to first the sequencer and now the expansion memory.  I hope this is the case with the sx900 also.

The newest arranger keyboards are definitely a "bigger bang for the buck" than the previous models.

The update coming on Winter time so there is still time for Yamaha to accomplish work on "TERCA" unless is already done.

1. Note shift to all individuals tones +/-12 separate for R1,R2,R3
2.Tuning scale individual for R1,R2,R3
3.Base note-which we already have
4. Possibility to memorized in Reg.Memory all

This is what a lot of musicians dream since a long time ago....

Thanks Yamaha

I tried SX-900 and as I tough we miss next things to have perfect ability for "USER HARMONY" :

1. Note shift to all individuals tones +/-12 separate for R1,R2,R3
2. Possibility to memorized in Reg.Memory all (including SUB scale)

With that job for "PERFECT USER HARMONY" will be finished.

There is still time until winter.

A video that shows a transition 1.4 > 2.0 with the words "the journey continues" sounds as a software update to my ears.
About the memory: the user wave memory inside Genos is probably bigger than now (it could be 4 or 8 GB) but actually OS 1.4 can't manage more than 1.8 GB. So, with the new update, Yamaha just allocates more memory and the next OS can manage up to 3 GB.
I think that a new Genos model will not have a video trailer like that but a different approach and, imho, what sense would it make to create a new OS and a new series arranger and then implement the same sales policy as the Tyros?

Please read the entire topic before posting those affirmations ...  There already have been spoken before, several times...

... For example, how would they get memory increased from 1,8 to 3 GB without physical hardware modification?

The IC (Integrated Circuits) already exist there. The memory IS there, but for some reasons it was not allocated to user needs.
They now will allocate that memory to user need. So simple! (Korg did that too ;) )
So, please, no more questions about that!

As Genos owner I do hope it will be software update...

As a Genos user, I believe (and a lot of us here) ... Do it yourself and, meantime, let's focus on other things ;)

This is a Software update, not a new Hardware unit.

There's many ways Yam could have expanded memory allocated to the Expansion Packs:
- Genos has an internal storage of 64Gb (eMMC) and on this single hardware memory unit, they created at least 2 partitions (or 'logical unit') : one for Expansion Wave files, and one for the System (and Factory Wave files I guess … ) , they could have resized the Partition dedicated to the Expansions Waveforms, and reduced the System Partition because they optimized their system (which is Linux based, remember… there's a lot that can be done to trim a linux distribution size …)
- Do a real-time Decompression of Waves stored in the Expansion Partition. Not easy as it could slow down the switch from one wave to another, but still doable since decompression is typically much less demanding in term of processing power than compression (which should be done ahead of time, in YEM for example). Anyway, there's always a tradeoff between the time taken to read a compressed file + decompression itself vs the time to read a larger uncompressed file … If the Genos main processor is powerful enough and the (de)compression algorithm is really optimized, the time spend on decompression could be negligible and even negated by the smaller file size !
- Do some 'housekeeping' and apply the compression on the System partition (the Linux distribution) in order to trim its size, and reallocated the gained space to the Expansion Partition. (this is in fact a 'blend' of the two previous points)

Of course, this is only speculations from me, but as an I.T. pro, it makes sense to me :)

There's a lot that can be done on the O.S. level of the Genos to really unleash the Hardware power inside !

On a personal note, I really hope they fixed the annoying (and awkward) 'multiple DSPs on one Part' bug and usability qwirks …

Wait and see, but the fact that they announced a V2.0 is really promising !

Benoit

That information does not say 8GB..
But 8Gb (bit as in small b)
Which equals 1GB
The information also says there is 2 of them, which makes for a total of 2GB
From which in os 1.4 and before about 1.8 GB was available to the user..

Quote
The Spansion S34ML08G2 8-Gb NAND device is Open NAND Flash Interface (ONFI) 1.0 compliant. The S34ML08G2 device is a dual-die stack of two S34ML04G2 die.

I can see hoe non techheads have a hard time what the quoted information from PJ’s site actually means..

So basically we are back again where we started.
There is 2GB physicall memmory in the Genos..
Meaning that to get 3GB of memmory, it requires (lossless compression)

We also know that Yamaha’s packs allready came in a lossless compression format
So this would probably mean that in Genos 2.0 yamaha’s own packs will be 50% bigger in size..
Which as Eilleen indicated makes this something that is good for people that use big 3rd party expansion packs,
like the CMS grand piano packs, or the incredible KApro packs

Hi folks,

here is some clarification about the size of the physical Wave Flash memory inside the Genos:

There is 2 GB "NAND Flash" for the Wave data of the Factory Voices (the two ICs 607 and 610, 1 GB each) at the Master Tone Generator SWP70 (IC 400).

And there is 4 GB "NAND Flash" for the Wave data of Expansion Voices (the four ICs 601, 603, 605 and 606, 1 GB each) at the Slave Tone Generator SWP70 (IC 600).

Unfortunately, I do not know why yamaha does not make the full 4 GB available for Expansion Wave data with the Genos Update 2.0 (but only 3 GB) ...

Best regards,
Chris

They are probably saving it for the next GENOS 2 keyboard.

Thanks Bachus for clarifying ... I quite read it in a fast way and I said a wrong thing about it.... sorry for that! :) I saw "8" and I did not take care about bit and not byte ;)

Best regards,
Vali
