My S970 is in the hospital - I need a virtual hug!
« on: August 07, 2018, 03:36:46 PM »
Hello friends! I am deeply shocked. My S970 is under a year old, and I have been very careful with it. Most of the time I just play at home. Now and again I go on a gig, and handle the instrument very gently. Yesterday I sat down to play and all was normal. Today I wanted to work a little more on a song, turned on the S970, and all I heard was hissing and crackling noise!! Turned on and off several times. Nothing worked. I had to bring it down to the store where I bought it. They gathered around it, shook their heads and was at a loss. All of them echoed each other in saying: This is a new one, this has never happened to a Yamaha before! That just made me feel worse, thinking that I was the "lucky" one to pick the one Yamaha failure! I am not worried, the music store is serious, and I have a warranty. But it shook me up really bad. So, with my dear S970 in the hospital, there will be no songs from me for a while. Have anyone else experienced something similar, or did I get the one instrument that someone cast an evil spell on? I need a virtual hug now, I am not a happy person at this moment....

Hi Toril.

Oh I do feel for you - Your fingers must be aching already with the loss of their keyboard friend. I hope they will soon be reunited.

I have never had a problem with any of my Yamaha boards - apart from old age telling me that they needed replacing with something newer.

Big hugs from me.

Cheers

Hi Toril,

I feel so sorry for you.

Yamaha keyboards are usually faultless (never had any problem with any Yamaha keyboard even cheap ones).

Maybe some electricity failure in your house or in the surroundings damaged the keyboard?

Best Wishes,

Thank you friends. I go on a trip tomorrow so I will be busy for some days. But the sad thing is I will never trust my S970 again. And to think that my other keyboards lasted for decades without any problems!!! I got such a shock today!

Thank you so much, Del! I fear that a repaired instrument will not be like a new one. After all, it has been opened again and people have rumaged around in there, taking parts out and replacing them. Maybe my fear is groundless, but I don't like it. I therefore asked if I by any chance could get a new board on the warranty, but they can't do that, and I understand that. It will be sorted out, my dealer is super! But... The keyboard lost its NEWNESS!

Hi Toril --

I'm sad to hear about your S970. That sounds like a fairly significant and uncommon hardware failure for a Yamaha 'board. Under warranty?

I can empathize with your feelings. Once a system (or whatever) has a major issue, trust takes a hit, too. I'm sure the repair folks will make it right as rain.

Hugs and encouragement -- pj

Hi Toril,
I am sorry to hear about your 970 and can understand how you feel. I have had mine for a couple of years and it has been out every week until recently when I decided it was time to retire and just play for me. Yamaha keyboards are usually very reliable but as with most things it is possible to have a fault. I should not worry to much because it will be well tested and the offending part will be replaced, then it will be as good as new.
   A big hug from me.

Wish I lived close enough to give you a big hug, and also loan you my backup S-950, which I just sold a few months ago. Those of us that entertain for our sole income always have identical backup keyboards, programmed exactly the same so if one were to unexpectedly die, we could go to work the following hour and not skip a beat.

Good luck, and I sincerely hope your problems are quickly resolved.

All the best,

Thanks, AlBegs and Gary! Gary, I still have my PSR 2100, but one can hardly call it identical to my S970! And I have my accordion, so if it is not back before the 15th of august, I will just have to improvise, I have a little "gig" then. I admit I got a little shaken. Yesterday all was fine, but now all that came out of the speakers were crackles, pops and other static noises. Well, electronic gadgets can have faulty parts, even Yamaha keyboards, so I will try to take it easy. Good to have friends who care! Take care!

I do not think you need to worry about that, Toril. Depending on the defect it will stand as a new instrument, yes.
There was a time ago I had a PSR 540 and as soon as I bought a defect, I thought the same as you,
but after returning from the repair, I stayed with him for 5 years without any problem.
The only problem I had afterwards was with the dysplay of the PSR 3000.
The keyboards of the yamaha are very robust but this can happen with either device.

Good luck,
Enildo

It is very unusual for Yamaha keyboards to fail.  I have had 6 of them and gigged with them almost daily without problems except for one.  I had a Tyros 4 that developed an internal amplifier failure.  Once replaced all was back to normal again.

I wonder if Yamaha would just replace your keyboard - much quicker if possible.

Hi Torril,

Sorry to hear your 970 is still convalescing.   Will they tell you at least what is wrong and what the recovery prognosis is?
Am sure it is difficult to trudge back to the 2100 but it will provide some solace and fingering workouts and just maybe some
new composition ideas.

UPDATE: My S970 is in Oslo! The fault was in the board that has to do with the amplifier. They are waiting for the part, if they don't have it in Germany, they will have to order it from Japan. So, this will take time. I went to the store today and asked. There was a moment of suspence, for the guys that sent away my keyboard forgot to write down where they sent it! Fortunately, after a little detective's work it was confirmed that it is in Oslo. I get really good service at the music store, so I am not afraid, but I miss my S970! I have my 2100, but it is like going into a time mechine and racing back to the time with Windows 95, floppy disks and all that :)

Hope you get it back soon, Toril.

Yes, when I go back to my PSR-2100 it is like going back a few generations of computer software.
But it still sounds good, and brings back many good memories for me!
I still keep it for my back-up - in case i ever have a problem like you are currently!

It seems like you have the same background as I do -I was  brought up on accordion, went to Yamaha keyboards, and ended up on the PRS-2100 and the S950!

All the best - and always have fun with music!

Hi Bruce! Yes, the 2100 is a very good keyboard, and I am so glad I kept it. In some respects it sounds better than the S970. I have had it for 15 years, and never a problem. It is good to hear that I am not the only one with a 2100 here :) I got my first accordion when I was eight years old, and have played accordion ever since. I am a hobby musician, but gig occasionally. Then I always have the accordion with me as well as the keyboard. Now I am having fun making "gig disks" for my 2100. But I struggle with the floppies, not all floppies that people generously have given me are compatible with PC and keyboard. There is also the fact that I have gotten into the habit of using many SFF2 styles now, and must find alternatives for the 2100. But all in all, I am having a lot of fun with my old friend the 2100.
