76 Keys a challenge but wouldn’t go back
« on: April 17, 2018, 09:56:57 AM »
I’ve been gigging with the Genos. Before that, I gigged with 61 key arrangers.

The switch from 61 to 76 Keys has been a challenge but has opened up so many options performance wise....don’t think I could go back to 61 Keys.

And what about the weight of synth? I thought that it's essential for gigging. I gigged with Kurzweil K2661 before, but can't stand to carry 15kg (despite of 61 keys) of weight all the time anymore   :'(  :)

This is the easiest keyboard to handle I’ve had in some time.

The Genos is 28 lbs 11 oz.
The S970 is 25 lbs 8 oz.
There is only a 3 lb 3 oz difference and is the lightest 76 key keyboard Yamaha has ever made.

Why would moving from 61 to 76 keys be a challenge? The same 61 keys are still there. I could see it being  a challenge the other way round but surely there can be no playing downside with additional keys. Worst case, you just dont use them.

Why would moving from 61 to 76 keys be a challenge?
I was thinking exactly the same thing.

Hello all,

The challenge in 76 Keys for me is utilizing the full keyboard.  Its a good problem to have

Coming from a 61 key, there are times I don’t always place my left hand where it belongs...just due to more real estate to cover.

For me it’s easier to handle than my PA4X was or S970 is because of the lip that exists on either side and the weight.

The biggest plus for me is being able to produce a different voice sound by using different octaves.  No need to hit the octave switch as much.

Judging by your video of last week how much room does it take to play ‘one fingered chords’?

Coming from a 61 key, there are times I don’t always place my left hand where it belongs...just due to more real estate to cover.

A temporary solution would be to cover the extra 15 keys with a hand towel
or pillow case, while getting acclimatised to the keyboard.

One can then slowly start revealing a few more keys each following week,
till one adjusts to all 76 keys.

Not the best solution, but something to consider.

Please forgive me Guitpic, I'm just trying to be funny, I couldn't help myself😉😉

Best Regards.

:)  HEE HEE!
Or wedge a playing card between the keys at the point next to where the bottom C key is on 61-note.

I occasionally play from piano scores.  The 76 keys handle any piece I've tried although as a bad player most of the songs I play could even be handled by 61 keys.

Hi Abby, this thread about 61 or 76 is the funniest on the site.  ...Please forgive  me I'm just trying to help myself  find the reason the heated discussion and the photo of the 61 version.   BTW Thanks for your photo. will be back.

Cheers

Hi
I cannot see what all the fuss is about surely 76 is better than  61 by a mile

8 notes in an octive just repeated
76 has more scope.

It took me 5  :o   minutes to throw the towel away!! :)

You skeptics are being unfair.

If you are used to positioning your left hand in relation to the bottom of the keyboard, 76 keys can be a challenge. If you’re used to positioning your R3 playing in relation to the top of the keyboard, same problem.

Yes, 76 keys are better, but for some people it takes getting used to.

Be nice.

Yes, it takes some time, but most people adjust to it quite fast. I've played 61 key devices for more than 20 years, but when I played a 76 key T5 in the shop, a was amazed by the extra possibilities, and bought it. Eventually it took me less than a week to totally adjust. I dropped the idea of positioning my hands relative to the top or bottom of the keys and instead always work from the central C1. After enough practising, your brains and muscle memory adjust perfectly and you position your hands without thinking.

Guys, surely it’s about moving the keyboard everyday
What else is it about then?

After playing keyboards for 30+ years almost everyday,
do you think I would have a problem to play a 76

We can split this down the middle

Home musicians and gigging musicians

If I was just playing at home It wouldn’t matter what size it is or how heavy it is.
A 61 is about 1meter long and a 76 is about 1.25 meters long
The weight difference would be minimal, I’m ok with 13 kilos.

Why did many Tyros 76 players also buy an S970
Cos they found the Tyros too heavy and awkward to move around,
Eileen and many others,

Keep calm you home players,

We’re just hoping for something that will suit us better.

Well it is each to there own I suppose but Genos has been the fastest selling keyboard here than any other so must tell us something. Also there were more 76 note Tyros keyboards sold than expected. Genos is a lot lighter than tyros and not much heavier than the 970.

Ok Guys
Just to show you that it’s not just
"talk the talk" sometimes we have to "walk the walk"

I’ve picked the hardest style that you would ever play on the keyboard
No timing, no chord track, no sheets, no edits, just sit down and play.
It’s a one shot take so the balance is way out.
an a 10 year old PSR.
How much better would the Drums be on Genos?

If Yamaha produce Genos 61 then it will be much lighter than Genos 76.

The drums are better on a Genos. How much better is a matter of opinion. If you don't see enough value in a new keyboard, don't buy one. But let others make their own decision.

I've been performing with a 61 for so many years that when I tried using a 76 one night, I was totally lost. I always anticipate that my little finger of my left hand was supposed to rest upon the C key - WHOOPS! ;) After a dozen songs with lots of mistakes, I adjusted to some degree and got through the night. For me, 61 keys is all I ever need to perform any song.

All the best,
