Genos Software Style Creation?
« on: February 27, 2018, 08:57:11 AM »
Am not sure this is the right place to ask this question but but besides style creation on Yamaha keyboards, is there a software out there that we can use to assemble style parts together and import them to Yamaha style format? For example like using ableton Live or fruity loops but not sure as I don't have those. Thank you

If you are talking about Style Creator Assembly.  It works pretty well once you get used to it... and it's fast. I believe there is no software that will do the exact same thing as well or as easy or as fast.

Actually there is one program that will do the same function as Style Creator Assembly. It is called Style Factory. I think it is rather pricey and does not support all the latest Yamaha arranger keyboards and hasn't been updated in years.  When I contacted the programmer last year he put me off and tried to sell me his StyleWorks software instead saying it was better.  It is not better and cost 3 times as much.

Is v3.0 right now to StyleMagicYA ( :) ), which support Genos, has a new flat interface and Thomas added some shortcuts keys for quickly work. It is the best software that I found for making styles for Yamaha. MixMusic is good too, and is free, but personally, I don't like the interface, it has a progressbar used as volume control in forms and has activated by default the marquee (programmer cannot shutoff this effect), and become annoying and disturbing to my eyes.

Kokoriz, the style engine of Yamaha is more complex than FruityLoops loops, it depends on chord played, it depends on variation playing, it depends on a lot of factors... The FruityLoops drag&drop interface is interesting, but is much much simplest as Style Engine of Style Creator is done... Style Creator has an Assembly function, but you can assign/assembly/change only channels from its file or other file(style). You cannot assembly from a midi file, for example.. You have to process the midi file, to add markers, to make assignment to channels of CASM... is a difficult and laborious process...

Regards,
Vali

I have been using StyleMagic for about 3 years.  It is a very good program for editing styles.  It has a great Voice Editor and Drum Kit Editor.  You can also save (Export) entire Sections to disk and load them (Import) to another style or even rearrange Sections.

This program was intended to create styles from MIDI song files.  But my opinion is that we can't very good styles from MIDI song files.  Song files are musically constructed differently than style files.  Style files consist of short loops programmed (recorded) in the key of CMaj7.  The problem with song files is there is a lot of work moving the different tracks around to conform to style files and then converting the key to CMaj7.  This requires editing of individual notes sometimes.

All in all StyleMagic is a great program for editing and mixing styles.  It supports all current and past arranger models and supports Yamaha sysex messages and has a great CASM Editor as well.

You can download a demo version for free and try it out.  The demo is fully functional accept for SAVE.

NOTE: I've been asking Thomas to add "Import MIDI Loop" for 2 years now, but I don't think he understands the concept or the value of doing that.  I find it much easier to build styles from loops.  I am getting tired of waiting on Thomas so I might have to give it a go in Cubase using Style Template that I created, and export it as a MIDI. Then load the MIDI into StyleMagic to convert it to a style file.

Hi Joe.
What do you mean by Midi Loop?!  ::)

Listen to each style Part separately.  What you will hear is a chord pattern or phrase or arpeggio that repeats itself.  Same with the drum parts.

These are short MIDIs about 1 or 2 bars long.  Sometimes they much longer (8 bars or even 16 bars) if the phrase has Brightness applied that changes over time, or panpot that goes from right to left... then left to right.

You can also look at the style parts in a sequencer or better yet MixMaster.  I started making styles from loops a couple of years ago.  You can purchase them in the internet or record your own.  I also convert Multi Pads by loading them into StyleMagic to create a 4-part Main Section and convert the Multi Pad to a simple Main Section style file then use Style Creator Assembly build the rest of the style by copying parts from different styles.
