Interesting!

"Newly implemented Half bar fill-in, Mono legato function expand the variation of your performance."

That's different from the PSR-S970, isn't it?

But the big questions are,
(1) will these models be sold in North America, or
(2) are they special modified versions of the PSR-S970/770 that will be sold only in certain countries?

Good questions Michael!

They're not showing up on the UK site yet but I'll keep looking ...

Looks to me like those improvements could have been done with a firmware update.

Half Bar
Save Live Control in registrations
Mono Lagato

Looks to me it's targeting a certain Asian market.  I agree with Eileen, we should wait for the next PSR successor to the S970.  I think we will see these improvements and MORE.

I'm looking the specs of s775 compared with my s770 but I can't find any major upgrade, only a few:

Half bar fill-in and Mono legato function
280 MB on-board memory for expansion data
A "Plus" button on Styles/Voices parts (on the "Plus" category: Euro dance or Salsa pack are pre-installed in PLUS category.)

Only one thing I like much: The total black finish of the case...

I see there is a 768MB Expansion Memory also.  This is silly marketing on the part of Yamaha.  The additional expansion memory could also have been done with a OS firmware update.

What Yamaha trying to do here?  I would be happy to pay a fee for these upgrades, but NOT pay for another whole keyboard.  This is unacceptable.  Looks like Yamaha is going the way of Microsoft and Apple Corporations.

Hi Joe,

The Expansion flash capacity is probably fixed and not an OS firmware update can increase.  It is limited by the hardware itself.

Thanks,

What Yamaha trying to do here?

Hi Joe and folks --

I think Yamaha is getting out a quick response to the Korg Pa700/Pa1000. The mid-range is super competitive. More opinions at:

http://sandsoftwaresound.net/psr-s975-announced/

I don't think the S975/S775 are targeted for current S970/S770 users. Not a big enough functional delta and too soon after the last mid-range launch. It's a pretty modest refresh with maybe the next biggest ONFI NAND flash memory dropped into the same printed circuit board footprint.

The PLUS category is interesting from the global perspective. Yamaha can pre-load and sell region-specific units. Smart. That's probably why they improved mono legato, too.

I'm still trying to figure out their functional roadmap for audio styles. The S975 has expansion space for audio styles; the S775 does not.

I haven't seen any pricing, but I expect prices to be comparable to current models.

All the best, everyone -- pj

Hi all, nothing very important;just a very small update from the S970, so i'll stay with my S970; the PSR S970 already have the 128 MB for audio styles only! I have not used this memory because i've not found some audio styles for the S970; the best thing is to be abble to use these 128 MB for expansion pack! Yamaha can make an update for this! All the best Patrick

I agree with Joe H. that those updates that were made in the S975, could have been made in the S970, with firmware update, but Yamaha simply did not want to. and if it is as PJD says, an answer to Korg Pa700 / 1000 I advance that my second keyboard is going to be the Korg Pa1000, because I plan to keep my S970, until there is a really important update from Yamaha. greetings Hans

To me, the fact that the model numbers differ from the current ones in the 1's place rather than the 10's suggests a minor change rather than a major one. I don't know whether all of the changes could have been accomplished with a firmware update; at least some of them may have required different ROM chips in addition to more RAM chips?

I'm guessing now that there is no firmware code space left for adding an option to save ' Live control' assignments in registrations for the 770/970. A real shame if true.

If these keyboards have new chip sets then I'll accept that these upgrades could not have been done with firmware code.  PJ stated there was plenty of room on the S970 for more expansion memory.  I and a few others have posted here many ideas for upgrades.  Yamaha refuses to accept these ideas directly from customers.

I think Yamaha is getting their upgrade ideas from this forum so they don't have to pay anyone royalties.  I can't believe there are no people at Yamaha dreaming up ideas for new features.  I think also Yamaha is focused on opening up new markets in Asia and the Mid-East.

For any company; how big... is big enough.

This is sad.  :(    :(    :(

Personally I expected at least 1GB of memory for expansion packs, chord sequencer, new styles with revo drum kit, song sequencer with deep event editing, vocal harmonizer with pitch correction. 5 styles of free play instead of three, 4 live control knobs, extended arpeggio library, combination of arpeggios between left hand and right hand. If all the above had been added to the S975, then it would be worth changing from S970 to S975. but at the moment there is no worthwhile reason to make the change from S970 to S975

Hello friends of this wonderful forum!

At last Yamaha heard your customers!
Half Bar Fill (although it does not have a specific button), Live Control (Knobs) can be saved in the Resgistration Memory
and "Mono / Legato" function, have been much discussed here in the forum.
Congratulations Yamaha!

While adding some interesting things, I do not know if it would be worth changing my s970 for s975.
The s975 is only a small update to the s970, but it's not a new keyboard.
Maybe it's better, at least for me, to continue with s970 until the next release (Psr s990 or g990 or s1000, etc.)
with other functions and features besides those placed in the s975.
They did with the s975 pretty much the same thing they did before the s900 for s910.

I'm going to wait! We might see more changes in the next S9xx or whatever it will be called.  When I requested the Live Control be saved in registrations... I was told "it couldn't be done".  There is only 2 explanations for what we see in the Genos and S975.

1. I was lied to
2. Yamaha re-wrote the firmware code to allow this function.

You were right Joe H! Live control could be resolved with an update.
Extracting the memory of "Expansion Voice" (768mb), the rest could be done only with updates.
The "Plus" styles and voices, we would continue to use the YEM to select what we wanted.

I think the 975 would be great those SA2 voices are nice violin trumpet I will miss them.
I will wait for a few demos but I might sell my T4 it is getting heavier, the size and weight
of the 975 same as the 970 which I will keep as I need two keyboards.
the 975 will probably sound good with one bose better two or 400 I will can cover the rest
on board speakers I like that too.
over 65 now I was hoping for better considered the PA 1000, but don't want to learn the
operating system, 970 and 975 basically the same set up

For those who own S970/S770 maybe is not good idea to switch.

For all those who own older keyboards than S970/S770 is very good opportunity to switch.

With half bar,Mono-legato,more expansion memory S975/S775 are Huge forwards compare S950 and older....

Very good keyboards for Eastern Europe/Balkan countries.

Good Job Yamaha.

Talking about PSR-S970 Vs PSR-S975 (Voices)
While viewing the specification chart

In S970
989 Panel Voices, 41 Drum/SFX Kits
Featured Voices:
131 S.Art!, 30 Mega Voices, 31 Sweet! Voices, 74 Cool! Voices, 89 Live! Voices, 30 Organ Flutes!

In S975
1090 Panel Voices, 55 Drum/SFX Kits
Featured Voices:
140 S.Art!, 30 Mega Voices, 32 Sweet! Voices, 74 Cool! Voices, 99 Live! Voices, 30 Organ Flutes!

So in S975 there are 101 additional panel voices, 14 additional Drum/SFX Kits.
In featured voices 9 additional S.Art! Voices, 1 additional Sweet! Voice, and 10 additional Live!  Voices. But the Mega! Voice and Cool! Voice are same as S970.
So there won't be any new Mega Guitars, Mega Brasses and Mega Choirs given in TYROS5.

OK, so plus looks like voice + style from Euro Dance, style from Salsa, voice + style from (various?) ethnic packs, and multipads from all of those.

I had a quick scan through the manuals. The expansion memory is (a bit) bigger, and you can display lyrics from audio files, and there's the infamous mono legato + half bar fills.

But there does not appear to be any change to anything else (no new effect types for example).

If you're new to the market then obviously pick S975 over S970, but if you're already on S970 I see no real reason to trade up.

Bother, back to working out how to sneak a Genos into the house.  >:(

And those new Plus styles appear to be Salsa and EDM mostly... so is this really a keyboard for the Asian market.  Where is the Joystick if it's for Eastern music?  Yamaha should have used the A3000 board instead of the S970 board.

There are a couple of places in the UK advertising S975 on pre-order, "available February", priced £1930. They're selling S970 for about £500 less so I'd expect the price to drop a fair amount before it's actually available.

Hello Guys, I checked the PSR data list -S975, and it has the same sounds that come in the S970, (the same pianos, the same strings, the same section of winds and metals etc. etc.) what I think is can New as "EXTRA SOUNDS" are those that come in the folder PLUS (EDM and Salsa) and some minor changes (Monolegato, half bar stuffing, and foot controller for Live commands). As said before, this could have been done with a simple firmware update on the S970, but sadly Yamaha did not want to listen, because commercial interests come first, rather than providing good support and helping the needs of customers .    Greetings Hans

On the Italian Yamaha site, the new PSR-S975 is described as the "definitive" PSR. This implies that there will not be a PSR S990, just as there has not been a Tyros 6. Will the PSR series also turn the page? I think so ...
In Italy the PSR S970 several sites offered it to €. 1,550.00 (a good deal), this initially made me think that within a year the younger sister of the Ginos would be commercialized, in reality the output of the PSR S975 seems a commercial choice to cover the next two years, meanwhile sales of the Ginos will have stabilized and it will be time for the heir of the PSRs970 / 975 ...
as always excuse the bad English .. Pietro

I believe this is the Asian version with a little more memory added and the S button which I think contains more Asian type styles.
