Onsong app on stage
« on: September 13, 2017, 07:51:59 PM »
Are there any of you good hardworking people in here that make use of Onsong (iPad, Microsoft) for lyrics and sending controller messages to the keyboard while playing live?

I understand you can with T4 make a list and call up these registrations from Onsong. A keyboard player opened my eyes with showing me this way of integrating lyrics, chords, and T4 configuration. Onsong also makes it easy to transpose tabs on the fly.

Do you have any experience to share, as I am planning to buy the product and make a system?
If not, I suggest you take notice and see if you can benefit from this option streamlining your workflow.

I use Onsong extensively for managing all of my song sheets which amount to lyrics and cords. Onsong is a great app and i highly recommend it. However I have not tried to connect it to my keyboard directly. I have a S970 and I would love to know how to use Onsong to call up the correct registration for the song on the 970. So, if I can answer any specific questions about using Onsong itself, I would be happy to assist. I will also be watching this thread if someone can steer us to integrating Onsong with the keyboard.

No app can call up a registration on a PSR. That feature is available only on keyboards with a hard drive.

OnSong Calls up TYROS Registrations

First you must have your TYROS MIDI communicating
with your iPad OnSong App.  Check the OnSong and
TYROS docs for MIDI setups and connections.

ON THE TYROS
To keep track of the Registration Bank numbers…
Number them in ascending order using the first three
digits as below:

   REGISTRATION BANK
001 Generic Groupname 1
002 DANCE 1
003 DANCE 2
004 BLUES 1… etc

For each Registration in a single REGISTRATION BANK…
Name your song and save the Registration.

    REGISTRATION EDIT
Then within each bank, name each  registration
(1 - 8 ) song and save your song data.
1 HEARTACHE TONITE
2 CANT YOU SEE
3… etc.

IN ONSONG

If your song was saved in  REGISTRATION BANK 56,
in SONG 2  as “SUSIE Q”.  The following MIDI command
embeded in the OnSong file will cause the TYROS
to select REGISTRATION BANK 56 and song 2, when the OnSong file SUSIE Q is loaded.

Editing the OnSong file
Open the song file in EDIT mode by…
Select the pencil to edit the file lyrics.
Top Line should have the Song name
2nd Line should have the Artist name
3rd Line should contain the MIDI data

      Susie Q
   Creedence Clearwater
    MIDI: 0.55 : 1@0
   Lyrics…

Note: TYROS uses 1 based offsets.  So the 55 in OnSong
is actually the 56th REGISTER BANK on the TYROS…
And the 1 in OnSong is actually 2 on the TYROS…

For each song in OnSong place a MIDI line in the file and
Modify its REGISTRATION BANK number and SONG number to reflect the numbers used by TYROS.

Hope this helps…

I am not familiar with onsong.  However, i do exactly what you describe .....

I have a Tyros 5 connected to an iPad with the app SongBook+.   i call the registration on T5 and automatically display the lyrics, chords, etc on the iPad.

Since you mentioned that you have not purchased the app yet, i thought you may want to consider SongBook+.

There might be other reasons why you want Onsong. So, this is just another alternative.

have a great day.
