Hello all,

PSR-S970 / -S770 Firmware has been updated.

[V1.04 to V1.05]
- Fixed a problem in which updating of the display and button response would slow down when many Expansion Voices were installed in the instrument.
- Fixed minor problems.

Thanks Artur for the info....I must check the Yamaha site more often.  :)

I've just had a play with this new version 1.05,  and some members that had the occasional A-E/F-J button issue may be wondering if this version helps at all, as indeed was I.

Well after giving it a test,  I can definitely say it's not made the issue worse,  which is always good.   I deliberately pressed the buttons dead centre with the odd press between centre and low spot, and managed 35 voice changes before it exited me back to the main screen just the once,  but I'll put that 1 exit down to maybe the way I pressed it.
One things for sure if I press the buttons like I normally do which is slightly biased centre to the high-spot it worked every single time perfectly.   It may be the placebo effect,  ;)  but I am thinking it seems noticably better...but time will tell.

I'll pop round my neighbours later, and update his 770 firmware, as his 770 suffers this exiting back to the main screen very badly indeed, so if there are any improvements in this 1.05 it will show up much more on his 770.

EDIT.
I've installed this 1.05 on my neighbours 770 on which previously we were lucky to select 3 or 4 voices before exiting, as it suffered badly with this button issue.   Well,  I'm not sure whether it was the effect of simply installing the firmware or not,  but I can say on 1.05 it did not 100% cure his,  but it certainly made a positive difference, as we could manage 30 to 40 presses before it exited back to the main screen, so a big improvement IMO,  his now is about how mine used to be, with just the occasional exit.  So I'm initially optimistic this 1.05 will hopefully help people that experience this odd button behaviour.  :)
So a big thanks to Yamaha for listening to us, and a huge thanks to Joe.H in his continued efforts in pushing the message home.
Early days,  but I suspect Yamaha may have reduced the issue to a more tolerable level on those badly afflicted and maybe eradicated it altogether on those mildly affected...fingers xxx anyway.

Just noticed as I was editing this post that my neighbour must be happy as he's ringing the local church bells...lol,   TRUE..  he said he had to go to bell ringing practice at 8pm.  I just had to add that when I heard the bells ringing..they probably sound better than his playing...lol...sorry Alan.

I've been following the instructions online but I keep getting the error "installer program not found" - I've tried a few thumb drives and deleted all midi files on the user drive - not sure if it's a space issue as I have the Entertainer Pack installed. The space on this 970 is ridiculously small for 2016. I even tried downloading from USA and Canada sites, no luck. Anyone else having this issue and if so, what is the resolution? Thanks!

Pen-drive should be formated Fat or fat32,  to be 100% sure, you can format it on the keyboard,  I don't myself but people recommend it.

Ensure the 'PSR-S970setup.prg'  is saved to the root of the pen-drive (not in a folder)
and hold down the main Style Control START/STOP button while powering on.

I wouldn't have thought having Expansion packs loaded would affect it, as my 970 has 4 packs loaded, and has little space left, unless it needs temporary work space to install firmware properly.  If all else fails, I suppose you could try deleting the pack assuming you have them saved so they can be reloaded again afterwards, just to eliminate that possibility.

Make sure you extract it from the folder onto your pen drive as the keyboard will not find it in a folder.

Thanks after about 10 tries, got it to install - I had previous versions in my mac download which added a 2/3/4 or 5 at the end depending which try/where I downloaded it from. I deleted all versions and deleted all my midi songs off the user drive and tried a 3rd USB and it installed - so I have no idea what the fix was but if you happen to have this problem, something listed above worked.

Thanks for pointers!

I've been following the button issue from the beginning.  Having purchased my S970 Nov. 2015, I have been waiting to experience some of the button problems.  None yet.  Now I have a concern about updating the firmware to correct a problem that hasn't delveoped.  Since I'm enjoying the Sunshine in Arizona until the end of the month, I'll wait and see.
Thanks to all that have been responding to the button issue.

I doubt it will have any negative effect on your 970,  you always have the option to install v1.04 again of course.

Rich,

Look at it this way... if you don't have the problem now, updating the firmware won't give you the problem (considering it eliminates the problem for those who had it).    ;D     :D

If you decide to update and then want to go back,  I can post the v1.04 firmware on BOX.com.

Hi all,

I don't think this update was meant to fix the issue with the "button press/jumping to main screen "problem??

The explanation of the version V 1.4 to V 1.5 is;

- Fixed a problem in which updating of the display and button response would slow down when many Expansion Voices were installed in the instrument.
- Fixed minor problems.

IMO display and button response slowing down, has nothing to do with jumping issue. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Well that was the reason I was initially a little sceptical, and any improvement we are seeing is maybe related to just re-installing the firmware,  I don't know. It did seem to be more of a generic update as they posted the same for the T5 which doesn't have any button issue,  so your guess is as good as mine.  However I asked Robert from Yamaha who initially made the post about this firmware update to clarify, specifically asking if it did anything for the A-E/F-J button issue,    There is no doubt it seems to have improved things,  but AIS in another thread how much of that is placebo wishful thinking, and mere coincidence I don't know.

This is the link to Roberts reply when I asked him to clarify if this update specifically did anything for the A-E/F-J issue,  and as you can see he categorically states it does,  so why should we doubt what Robert stated ?   ;)   The fact remains that whether by design or accident the update does seem to improve that button issue, and I'm happy to take any improvement no matter how it came about.  :)

I believe this is the same Robert I first communicated with and who has communicated directly with Steve Deming on the button problem.  I think he knows what he is talking about.

Further more Steve Deming sent me an email regarding this firmware update confirming this update is in response to the button reports and he has personally tested it.

  Hi there, Joe,

Cheers to you again for keeping us updated.

Any chance of your posting the body of Yamaha's latest email to you for all to see?  Sorry if I overlooked it;  but it would save my trawling through the older posts?

I wonder why Yamaha did not announce this 'fix' together with a loud fanfare, for the benefit of all keyboard owners, keyboard stockists and potential PSR-S770/S970 return-buyers to see?

  good regards, Jack

PS: My brother installed the V1.05 update and sees an improvement to the extent that there is no jumping back to the Main Screen any more.

Hi friends and all great Yamaha Gurus..

Greetings..

I just got my new PSR S-970 yesterday  :). It's a moment of joy for me. I spent the whole evening until late night to explore it.
To-date I've created more than 300 styles with my previous S910 & S950 (loaded with Indian 2 exp pack).

1) So far I don't experience any sticky buttons but I sense a slightest delay when I change from one voice to the other. I checked the version..its 1.04. I say this because I compare with the 950 side-by-side. Is the update 1.05 still necessary?

2) As I tried to install the same exp pack (Indian 2), it shows all existing folders in my USB stick( Indian Pack 2, Indian Entertainer, Indian Devotional, Indonesia 2 etc)..I opened up every folder..but it shows NO contend!! What might have gone wrong?? Should I save them right into the USB..instead of saving them in folders?? Nearly half of my styles would NOT work properly unless I have the exp pack installed!!

3) Comparatively..as I start playing some voices, I noticed that they sound softer compared to S950. I guess this is temporal as I'll get used with the volume level eventually as mentioned by some members in the forum.

4) Key feel and buttons are OK but Yamaha could have improved on it.

5) Beautiful 7 inch display

PSR-S970..LIFE IS EVEN MORE FUN FOR ME.. :o 8)

Thank you SO MUCH to all beloved members of this forum for your kind and generous contribution.

I've installed V 1.05 and problem fixed.
My biggest concern is issue # 2. All expansion packs meant for S950 will NOT work with S970. Suppose I've created 100 styles in S950 using voices from the 950 exp packs...they will not play as should be in the S970. I hope Yamaha will find a way to fix this problem.

Regards & THANKS for your support.

sd isaac,

Any Expansion Pack you bought you should be able to get free replacements for by contacting Yamaha MusicSoft.  You will also have to register your new keyboard as well before they will give you any packs.

There have been several free packs issued for the S970 so there may be Voices you can use from those packs.

These are the following packs which I downloaded free from the internet last year:-

1) Best of Europe Pack_ A2000
2) Best of Europe S970
3) Brazil_pack2_s750_S950
4) China Pack_S750S950
5) Indian_EntertainerS950
6) Indian_pack2_s950
7) IndianDevotionalPackS950
8) Indonesian_3_S970
9) Indonesian2_S970
10) Japanese_S670
11) LATIN-2
12) mariachi_norteno_pack_s7-950
13) mexican1-2_pack_s750950
14) oriental_gcc_middle_east_pack_a2000
15) oriental_iran_pack_a2000
16) oriental_maghreb_a2000
17) PSR-S650IndianPack.yep
18) psr-S950 Church & Christmas Styles
19) VSEPA1-Celtic
20) VSEPA3-Balkan

And I never paid to anyone. It was available and I just downloaded all of the above. I did contact Yamaha Malaysia 2 days ago to find out any free pack that come with S970. They reply NO such deal.
Most of my styles in 950 was created with Pack #6 above ( Indian Pack 2, S950)- took me 2 years to create almost 300 styles. When I load all these styles into my new S-970, I'm helpless. 970 will not load/recognize packs meant for 950!!..so all those valuable voices will be missing in the style.

So I see a risk for all those who are enjoying their S950 and planning to upgrade to S970 assuming that it will play all the exp pack previously used in the S950..

Regards

Again THANK YOU all for your concern.

Maybe you will just have to buy the Indian 2 pack for your s970.

https://www.yamahamusicsoft.com/sound-and-expansion-libraries/vse/indian-2

I guess there is no more free lunches!   :D  I think Yamaha got tired of all the packs being distributed for free (that Yamaha NEVER offered for free).  So now they give us YEM with a Voice Editor and mix 'n match packs and build our own packs and also more memory for multiple packs for those who are willing to pay.

You are right. I didn't know that there is dedicated packs for S970 until you pointed it. Bought the Indian 2 pack for S970 yesterday and installed in my PSR. Works fine. I just need to re-assign those Pack voices in the missing tracks and my playing is back to normal. I still keep my PSR-950.

So...no more free lunch :D
