Title: Porn ban?
Post by: Robert van Weersch on October 09, 2015, 10:49:54 PM
When I tried to visit this forum from my hotelroom, I got this message:
"Sorry Robert van Weersch, you are banned from using this forum!
Porno Poster #023
This ban is not set to expire."

I suppose the hotel's IP address is on some blacklist, but that's not all. After that I tried to visit the forum from two smartphones, using their own 4G connection, and I got the same error. I'm getting the impression that this blacklist contains a lot of public access points and mobile IP's, but it's very inconvenient...

Luckily, I have remote access to a server at home and I'm typing this message from that server.

Robert,

You are not on this forum Ban List, you are on two Blacklist, but so are nearly everyone.
It could be that hotel's IP was the center for bad activity in the past and their IP Address
is logged on our Ban list.
In that case you might consider using another hotel or telling them about this, I will not
remove the BAN from our list in any case, as it was put there because of that activity.
BTW - there have been over 8,000 attempts to log on here from that banned IP Address.

Since you were able to post this, you know you have access here, just not from that every
where on the planet.  ;)

Ok Bill, thanks for your reply. Not the method I would choose (I've been an admin on several 10.000+ member forums) but it's a choice and I respect that ;)

Robert,

Please tell me, what method would you use????

The membership of this forum would be over 20,000 now if we never deleted anyone, but
we keep this site pared down to those who have been active within the last two years.
So, you need to at least log on once in two years to be considered active.

Since spam posts are 99,9% posted by bots on infected computers, I'd use a modern CAPTCHA to fend off bots. The last time I used an IP ban is more than 10 years ago because IP bans are not effective and also affect "innocent" users who use the same IP. Think of schools, company's, hotels, public access points. In those days, wifi was not very common so the affected group of users was acceptable. Nowadays, if you ban an IP for one infected user, you potentially prohibit dozens of other users from accessing this forum.
I spend quite a few days per year in hotels, for work, and to be honest, I then normally don't visit this forum because I don't drag along my S950 on business trips :)  Last weekend was the first time I did visit the forum, in a mid-size hotel in the Netherlands, which has free wifi access for its guests. And most guests use it because mobile data charges are still unreasonably high in our country. I was able to bypass the ban because I'm an IT guy and have access to several routing methodes like VPN, remote machines etc. But not everyone is so "lucky"  8)

But like I said, I respect the choice, albeit not the choice I would make. I absolutely don't want to get involved in policy discussions on yet another message board, that's something I have done too much in the past and I have worked hard to delegate that responsibility to others. I just want to point out the effects and alternatives nowadays, and leave it to others to act on it. Or not, which is fine by me.

I never met this problem - like most other members - I may hope ?  :P

Best wishes, Jeff

I for one absolutely beyond any doubt what so ever "HATE", repeat "HATE" those @#$%^&** CAPTCHA's!  >:(

They are stupid, unreadable nonsense fine for sites that only sell stuff.

Anyone applying for membership here and feeling they were denied without good reason has only to notify Joe or me for consideration.
To my knowledge no one has been denied without due reason(s).

This is a friendly place for folks who have a common interest and need help with their PSR/Tyros keyboards.
We do tire very quickly when confronted with chronic whiners and folks who just like to cause arguments for their own devious pleasure or in an attempt to prove how intelligent they are.

I also travel a bit and use those hotel accommodations and have not run into being denied access due to a bad IP Address and in the 12 years I have been with this forum, this is the first time seeing this complaint.  ;)

I've come across several of the 'captchas' on some websites that are so blurred and distorted..  I give up after 5 attempts..

I've seen a few sites that use very reasonable "captchas" of just three easily-read capital letters, or sometimes three easily-read digits displayed in photos of house numbers. I wish all "captchas" were like that, instead of the warped, overlapping, ambiguous gobbledygook ("Is that a capital Z or a lowercase z? Is that a lowercase l or a 1?" etc.) which is so frequently used.
