Yamaha MFC10 or Behringer FCB1010
« on: October 23, 2017, 04:17:17 AM »
Hi,

for my coming Genos I think about the following choice. Should I buy a Yamaha MFC10 or a Behringer FCB1010.

Yamaha MFC10

* expensive (294)
* external power supply
* only one expression pedal
* has 4 inputs for external pedals (switch or expression pedal)
* supports Yamaha XG system exclusive midi commands
* supports CC toggle and momentary switching

Behringer FCB1010

* cheap (158)
* internal power supply, uses standard cable
* two expression pedals
* supports sending midi notes (relevant for Tyros/Genos external controller support)
* does not support Sysex midi (not necessary for Tyros/Genos)
* does not support CC toggle (Leslie) or momentary (Sustain) switching

So what to do?

For the S970 the FCB1010 was not interesting, because style control was not possible in this combination. However, Tyros and Genos support translation from midi notes to internal functions (like style control), thus FCB1010 works fine for Genos.

The standard firmware of the FCB1010 does not support momentary or toggle switching. So sustain pedal function is not possible. So another standard foot pedal will be needed for this. But there is a firmware update available, supporting theses functions.

Any comments?

Hi Uli --

Personally, I would lean toward the MFC10. SysEx ability is relatively rare in MIDI controllers. Could be handy if you decide to connect the MFC10 to something non-Yamaha.

I have a Behringer BCN44. I realize that it's a much simpler, smaller device. However, Behringer hosed the MIDI merge function which was absolutely necessary for the intended application. This left a bad taste in my mouth. I've had good luck with Behringer and I've had bad luck with Behringer.

Maybe someone can address the FCB1010 specifically?

Take care -- pj

Pj,

thank you for your valuable reply. :)

I also tended towards the MFC10, because it's Yamaha. I bought one used for 112. So this will be ok to experiment.

However, the SysEx ability of the MFC10 only supports Yamaha XG commands. It's not a freely configurable SysEx interface. And I got the impression, that the FCB1010 is built more solidly, meaning metal instead of plastic. So perhaps I will test the Behringer, too, eventually.  8)

Hi Uli --

I've just got to ask...

How did Yamaha find a way to limit SysEx to just XG messages? Yeeeeesh!

I can tell you this. Yamaha is master for making special solutions and avoiding more general concepts.  ;D ;D

As seen in the manual, you can choose one number, the remaining sysex string is put around it automatically.

This is a Yamaha-related forum. We need one of these:
