USB to PSR 9000
« on: September 03, 2016, 07:10:31 AM »
Hello,,!

Question: Has anyone on board made the "Floppy to USB" conversion on their 9000 KB? What I saw demo'd on youtube that worked well using a computer was encouraging but I would like to know if anyone has tried it on their KB?

Thank you and thanks to all who offered up their "styles" that gave  me a huge "kick start" playing the used and abused 9000. . . :)

Ken

I didn't bother with the usb floppy mod, I put a pata to compact flash adapter into the drive bay this morning (replacing my sata adapter) and have the cf card on an extension poking out the front in a slot i cut with a dremmel.

Works a treat, no hd noise, easy to remove (like smart media card on psr1500 i had) as the 9000 only supports 2gb partitions its better.

On researching this, I take the first step is to 'swap out' the floppy cables with the ATA adapter cable and then introduce the 9000 case to the Dremel drill? . . .and the rest is straight forward?

I didnt remove the floppy, i ment the hard drive bay sorry.

I used these:

Ebay item numbers:

Card reader adapter : 201168939096 3.58 (as of 14/9/2016) Free P+P

30CM 44pin cable : 282157550965 2.50 (as of 14/9/2016) Free P+P

44 pin coupler : 190533192334 1.19 (as of 14/9/2016) Free P+P

All uk based suppliers.

Upto 2GB CF card can be used,  same limitation as HD.

Glued the CF card using 5 minute epoxy to the bottom case inside, marked where the cf card would protrude, cut it and let it set 24 hours.

Plugged the CF card using the 30cm 44pin cable to the port on the keyboard using the 44pin coupler.

@Ken
I think simons solution is much better so you can manage your CF Card in your computer and just plug in .. (without screwing the Harddisc out)

I sold some USB Floppy Adaptors, the expensiver ones which use regular Folders, just build folders 001 -099 and put the files in the folders, than you select the Number and load your songs.
The cheaper adaptors use special virtual folders that have to format specially and so handling is a bit more uncomfortable ..

ALL Adaptors are virtually Disks .. so limitations of Disk (1.44MB each) is the same and Speed also ...

But BETTER is the CF Card solution so you have still the Floppy (if it works already) and additional CF Card to plug in.

Hello Frank! Thank you for your input in this. I, too, believe the CF card reader would be the way to go given my FD is working fine. Question, can you point me to the right supplier for the adapter hardware, one's you would place your confidence in?

Thank you,

Orm

With all that I have gathered re FDD conversion, FD to USB will be my choice. Can anyone therefore, recommend a "store bought" unit such as GOTEK sells?

Again, thank you.

Sincerely,

Orm

Dear Orm, there ar a lot different types out there ....

I used the gotek with the red button , that was the expensive model but was simple to use.
with that model there is no virtual formatting necessary, only build folders like
001
002
003 and put in the files in the "folder disks" maximum 1.44mb (like floppy)

I tried to geht these kind of usb floppy converter month ago, I try again for you.
