DGX 650 Styles and USB question
« on: December 04, 2015, 09:06:18 AM »
Is a DGX 650 able to use styles that are on a USB drive such as the PSR series are able to?

If so, which style file does the DGX650 use?

SFF1?

SFF2?

Tx

Answers appreciated.

I tried a search of the DGX 650 but I'm not sure I got my answer.

Thanks to any that might have an answer.

Yes, the DGX-650 can play style files directly from a USB drive.

I believe it uses the same SFF1 format as the PSR-E keyboards-- two intros, two mains, two(*) fill-ins, and two endings.

* The MIDI messages that trigger the sections of the style appear to support four fill-ins, or ten sections in all:

Section 00 = Main A
Section 01 = Fill-in A>A
Section 02 = Fill-in A>B
Section 03 = Intro A
Section 04 = Ending A
Section 05 = Main B
Section 06 = Fill-in B>A
Section 07 = Fill-in B>B
Section 08 = Intro B
Section 09 = Ending B

Thanks Michael.

So are styles even produced anymore in SFF1?

Maybe I don't understand?

Yes, Yamaha must still be making SFF1 style files, because they're still adding new styles for the PSR-E/YPT and DGX/YPG models on their MusicSoft website.

However, there have been different versions of the SFF1 format over the years, and although the XGlite models that use the SFF1 format are (AFAIK) limited to two variations, the files themselves can contain four variations-- even if an XGlite keyboard can't play the C and D variations, it doesn't hurt for them to be present in the file (aside from wasting memory in the keyboard).

Michael,

One other question.  I know you can't load SFF2 styles into the DGX650.   Suppose you can play them if they are on a USB stick?

Hang on, I was mistaken. The specifications in the manual say it can play "SFF GE" style files, which is "SFF2"-- so it can play SFF2 files.

However, I was correct that the number of variations playable is two (A and B), which is why I was thinking it was limited to SFF1 files.

The manual is a bit ambiguous (not 'a first' for Yamaha manuals!) about the Style format used by the DGX-650.

It shows the Style File Format (SFF1) 'logo' on the front cover and page 8, and on page 8 it says...

STYLE FILE
The Style File Format is Yamaha’s original style file format which uses a unique conversion system
to provide high-quality automatic accompaniment based on a wide range of chord types.

In the Manuals of keyboards which use internal styles of SFF-GE (SFF2) format, it is the SFF-GE logo that is used.

Then in the Specifications on page 80 it says...

External Styles             Yes (SFF GE)

So presumably it will play both external SFF1 and SFF2 styles.   :-\

However I don't know if it automatically substitutes voices if a style part uses a voice that is not present.   There is no 'Mixing Console' or 'Style Creator' that can be used to select a style part voice on other keyboards such as the PSRs, so you may need to use a computer program to modify the voicing for some styles, although many styles are already voiced using GM or XG voices to make them more compatible with multiple keyboards.

It seems that you can load styles into the internal 'flash' memory if the keyboard is connected to a computer running Musicsoft Downloader (Windows only) or from a USB stick.  These styles then show in the selection list as style numbers 196 upwards.

Regards

Ian

Michael, Ian,

Many thanks guys for taking your time.

I ordered a DGX 650 today.  So I should know what's going on soon.
