Can anyone please advise me how to open MXL files like the ones on the Wikifonia database

You can use a program Musescore. It is free and available at www.musescore.org.

I posted the question from here in Sydney and was thinking that I would have to wait until the northern hemisphere wakes up on Saturday morning.

Hi Adrian,

It looks like Lennart helped you find Musescore.  Here are a few more programs that will open the MXL format:

Finale, Sibelius, SmartScore and PhotoScore.

There are actually almost 200 programs that will read and open this format.
