PSR Tutorial CD-ROM

April 2008 Release

CONTENTS

This PSR Tutorial CD-ROM is available to all Supporting Members of the PSR Tutorial web site and forum. The contents of this disk are drawn from the files available on the PSR-Tutorial web site although there are quite a few additional files included as well. Unlike the files on the site, however, most of the files on the CD-ROM are not in a compressed or "zip" format, but rather are uncompressed and ready to use. A brief description of the CD-ROM contents is provided below.

Note 1: because of the growth of the web site, all of the files could no longer fit on a single CD. So, we have created a separate PSR Demo CD and a PSR Tutorial Styles CD. The Styles CD has some 20,000 styles on it including some of the original Yamaha PSR/Tyros styles converted from other keyboards, the "Gig-disk" styles, and other styles collected from the internet.

Note 2:: Your purchase of this CD makes you a "Supporting Member" of the PSR Tutorial. This will give you access to the Charter Members Area of the PSR Tutorial forum, which only Charter and Supporting members can see. If you are a Supporting (or Charter) member, it will say so on all of your messages. If it doesn't, that is because I haven't marked your account as a Supporting Member and., I can't do that until I know the UserID you use on the forum. (The UserID does not have to be, and often is not, a person's actual name.) Simply send me an email ( jpwaters@gmail.com ) letting me know your forum id along with your real name and I will update your account. I do not need to know your password; only you know your password. Neither I nor any forum moderator has access to passwords. -- Joe Waters

3,463 Style Files

All the preset styles from a number of Yamaha keyboards are provided on this CD -- PSR740, PSR8000, PSR9000, PSR9000PRO, PSR550, PSR2100, PSR3000, Tyros, Tyros2, and Clavinova. In addition, there is a folder of useful Christmas styles including the Christmas Gig disks of Gary Diamond and Larry Warner.. (In a folder called "Bedesem Utilities," you will find Michael Bedesem's latest Midiplayer program, which can be used to convert styles from any PSR keyboard to your particular model PSR. All of Michael's utilities are compressed and in the format you would get if you downloaded them directly. Simply copy the zip file over to your hard drive, unzip it there, and follow the installation directions.)

The style files are not compressed. You can see them in the Explorer (move your mouse over START, right click, and then choose "Explore"). Open the "Styles" folder. In that folder, you will see a list of other folders, one for each keyboard. Open a particular keyboard folder, for example, "PSR9000Pro," and you will see folders for each of the style categories that were available in that keyboard.. Finally, open up a style category folder, for example, "8 Beat", and you now see all the 8-beat styles that came with the PSR9000 Pro.

To play the styles, you need to move them to your PSR or Tyros. Highlight a style, or group of styles, and drag them to your floppy drive (or to your USB drive). Take that floppy (or USB drive) to your PSR or Tyros keyboard and insert it. When you go to "load" a style, tab over to FLOPPY DISK (or USB) and you will see all the styles on the floppy (or USB drive). (If you copied over the folder, it will be visibe and the styles will be in that folder.)

If you have a 3000 or Tyros2, you can copy hundreds of files on to your flash drive and use them directly in your PSR-3000. In fact, with a 512MB or larger flash drive, all of the styles on this CD could be copied over to that flash drive.

Styles from later keyboards have different file types, such as "prs" or "sst" that are not recognized by earlier keyboards. If you have an earlier keyboard, just change the filetype to ".sty" and your keyboard will recognize and play these styles. You will find an Excel file and an html file that show you the contents of all the style folders as well as a complete alphabetical list of all the styles included. Note that styles with the same name on different keyboards may not, in fact, be the exact same style, particularly if OTS is included in the style.

4,787 Songs

Almost 4,800 songs from the PSR Performers are included on the CD-ROM. There is also an alphabetical index to all the Performer songs. (The index is available as an MS Excel file, but don't automatically print it out -- 4,700 songs produce a LOT of pages.) The songs, like the styles, are not compressed. Simply copy them to a floppy disk (or USB drive) and then play them in your PSR. Also included is an index to the PSR Performers with links to a page for each performer that includes a photo of the performer and a bit of a musical biography.

Demo Videos

In the folder called "Videos" you will find three movies of Michael Voncken demonstrating the PSR3000, the TyrosII, and the new PSR-S900. Double-click on the video to launch the video. These are "wmv" files and can be displayed with Windows Media Player.

Voices and Multipads

These two folders hold 800+ voices including 100-voice and 70-voice sets Scott Langholff made for the PSR-2000 and voices made by Mike for the Tyros, plus other customized Tyros/3000 voices. Of particular note are 150 drawbar presets by John Traves.

There are over 400 multipads on this CDROM. 200 multipads developed Frank Blecha (Seeker), 168 multipads by Leo Dunne, and 38 multipads by Vince Lutz. The multipads should play on any of the PSRs or Tyros keyboards.

Music Finder Databases

The Music Finder databases are keyboard specific, that is, what may work on a PSR-2000 will not work on a PSR-1000 or a PSR-2100. There are utilities to convert an MFD from one keyboard to another, but I have already done that conversion and put the "master" mfd file, and its major components, into separate keyboard folders for the 1000, 1100, 2000, 2100, Tyros, and CVP209. You will also find the original mfd files for several of these keyboards on the CD-ROM. Yamaha recently released a series of MFDs for the new Tyros2. They are included in the Tyros2 folder and, using Michael Bedesem's MusicFinderView, can be converted for use by other keyboards.

Manuals

Anyone who has poured over the PSR-3000 manual may have noticed that the manual doesn't hold up very well to heavy use. You can, however, download a PDF file of the manual from Yamaha's internet site. No need to do that, however, since manuals for the PSR-2100, PSR-3000, PSR-9000, 9000Pro, Tyros, Tyros-II, and the new PSRS700/S900 are all included in this folder. These manuals are in pdf format and will require Adobe's acrobat reader, which is commonly available on the internet and is probably already installed on your computer.

Music & Songs

The title to this section is an important link -- it opens up a world of information for you. Most of the information from the "Music" section on the internet site is included on this CD-ROM. Click on the link above to Music & Songs and you will have access, via your browser, to a wide variety of useful resources:

  • The Secrets of Chords and Chord Progressions, a 39-week course that will teach you all will ever need to know about playing chords on your PSR.
  • A listing and description of all the Fake Books currently available in the US market;
  • An index to some 12,000 songs found in 44 of those fakebooks including, for each song, an indication of which book(s) the song can be found in;
  • A listing of the "Top Songs" as measured by a various criteria, (top 40 each year, top singles, top country, top waltzes, etc.);
  • A variety of articles about music subjects and musical construction projects and accessories;
  • A number of discussions in the "Pro Clinic" where various arranger keyboard professional provide their views about various aspects of performing; and, finally,
  • Some pointers to various internet sites where you can get music lessons.

When you click the link above, you will be going to the "index.html" file, which is in the Music_Songs folder. Be sure to bookmark this page in your browser and you can then always go to it for further study. Of course, the CD has to be in your computer to use the information on the CD. Alternatively, you can copy the entire Music_Songs folder to your hard drive. All of the material can be access there by starting with the index.html file.
